Experienced Based Learning
|
Most Secondary Career and Technical Education (SCTE) programs offer an On-the-Job Training (OJT) or In-House Training (IHT) work component, enabling students to learn from real work experience and earn high school credit at the same time. Juniors are expected to work 10 hours per week; seniors are to work 15 hours per week.
OJT allows students to use their acquired classroom skills in a real job setting. High school credit is received, and students are paid a wage by their employer. Employers who participate sign a Training Agreement and together with the teacher and student, develop a progressive Training Plan, aimed at involving the student in higher order thinking skills and the use of advanced technology.
IHT provides students a work experience within the school setting. Students receive high school credit and experience the skills, knowledge and attitudes that accompany a real job, but do not receive a wage. IHT happens at the school during regular school hours, under the supervision of a teacher.
In addition to OJT and IHT, other experienced-based learning opportunities provided by SCTE programs include action projects outside the classroom environment, job shadowing experiences and internships.
