Externship benefits both educator and business

Enter Cooking at Bonnie’s Place, a Wichita business which offers cooking classes to skilled and novice culinary enthusiasts. Owner Bonnie Aeschliman knew exactly what she wanted to get out of her summer extern–help with developing a “Teamwork in the Workplace” curriculum that she could market to businesses.
The CTE externship program for teachers became a perfect match for both culinary professionals. Aeschliman, a former educator herself, would have Swisher’s culinary classroom expertise to bounce ideas off of, and Swisher would have Aeschliman’s creative business perspective to take back to her classroom.
“Each year our students compete in ProStart and it becomes very obvious to me that lack of teamwork is a major issue,” Swisher said. ProStart is a career-building program that complements classroom instruction by providing students with competitive opportunities and on-site culinary experiences. “It is my goal to create a classroom environment where students want to succeed and will realize every worker (or student) is important in the chain of events that leads to success of a project,” Swisher added.
“I will take my experience at Bonnie’s Place to school every day,” she said. “I believe everyone who teaches occupational classes should have business experience. Students pick up very quickly on teachers who ‘tell’ them what the workplace is like. I don’t want to ‘tell’ my students what I have read, but want to share my business experience with them. It becomes much more authentic.”
