Student Wellness Information
Children who are healthy are ready to learn. Students who learn about the importance of physical activity and good nutrition are able to make healthy choices. Learning to make healthy choices helps children reduce the likelihood of obesity as adults. Obesity is a concern because it can lead to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some types of cancer, and gallbladder disease. With the increase in childhood obesity, children are now being diagnosed with these diseases.
To help promote student wellness and to combat childhood obesity, district wellness policies have been developed.
The following policies were approved by the Board of Education in December, 2005, and January, 2006:
P7500 Student Wellness: Overview
P7501 Student Wellness: Health Education
P7502 Student Wellness: Physical Activity
P7503 Student Wellness: Nutrition Guidelines
The Student Wellness Guidelines Manual provides information including nutrient guidelines for vending and a la carte food and beverage items, food safety requirements, and nutritious foods to be considered for school events.
