The ESOL/Intake Center staff will assist our largest growing population in the Wichita Public Schools.
Hours are 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
- Parents and students come to the center only if their children are new ELLs (English Language Learners) in the Wichita school district whether they have relocated or are recent immigrants.
- New students will be directed to the school with the program most suited for tem after a review of the English proficiency test.
- ESOL/newcomer Intake students will arrive at the ESOL sites with enrollment forms in a colored folder with students' name for easy processing. A checklist will be included in the packet so that school staff is informed immediately what is included.
- Out of district ESOL students may pre-enroll as USD 259 students at the Intake Center at regular enrollment times and prior to Sept. 20.
- Students who may need ESOL support should come to the Intake Center. Those with siblings in an ESOL school may enroll there. The Home Language survey will determine the need.
Identification of New ESOL Students
The identification process may include some of the following depending on the need and the profile of the student(s).
- Newcomers will be tested for language and basic information whenever possible.
- Language assessment is needed for students who have entered the district from another school district (in or out-of-state)
- A brief interview and description of their previous schooling experience will be taken.
- A review of age verification, transcripts, grade cards or any pertinent information.
- Assessments will include - PRE-LAS and LAS or KELPA. Some assessment data may include results from a test in their native language.
- As much information will be explained to families so that when they get to the school, they will be informed about the district and some information about the school.
ESOL/Newcomer Intake Enrollment Forms ESOL/Newcomer Intake Enrollment forms include:
- PIF (Pupil Information Form)
- HLS (Home Language Survey) will be completed at the Intake Center and the original copy will be sent to the schools. Their status will be documented
- Migrant Survey (will determine status)
- Internet Access, zero tolerance letter to Parents
- Food Application (when possible)
- Immunization Information will be provided
- Testing results on English Proficiency
ESOL Newcomer Programs
The sites for the 2006-2007 school year. Five of the six sites have other ESOL programs. All newcomer students will attend one of these sites.
Elementary: Cloud, Colvin, Irving, Jefferson, OK (newcomer only), and Washington
Middle: Curtis, Jardine and Pleasant Valley
High: East and North
