Magnet and Alternative Schools
The Wichita Public Schools realizes that top quality education doesn't come in a one-size-fits all package and therefore
offers a wide variety of choices to help obtain that educational match between students and school. Wichita Public Schools has choices that have been developed in collaboration with students, parents, dedicated citizens and the business community. Magnet schools, alternative schools and special programs demonstrate the customized approach to education that we have to offer.
ELEMENTARY MAGNET SCHOOLS Wichita Public Schools currently has 19 elementary magnet schools (Kdg - 5) which offer specialized curriculum areas in health and wellness, multi-media, leadership, communications, science, computer technology, international studies, aerospace and engineering, dual language, core studies, environmental, literacy, performing arts, traditional settings or an open teaching environment.
KDG - 8 MAGNET SCHOOLS Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet offers a Kdg - 8 grade English/Spanish immersion program. Gordon Parks Academy for grades Kdg - 8 has submitted an application to become a primary years and middle years International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) school.
MIDDLE MAGNET SCHOOLS Back-to-basics traditional teaching and curriculum, technology, performing arts and cultural and fine arts make up our four middle magnet school programs for grades 6 - 8.
HIGH SCHOOL MAGNET Northeast Magnet High School offers specialized programs in law/public service, science, and visual arts for students in grades 9-12. Students throughout the city are eligible to apply for Northeast Magnet.
ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS Alternative schools in our district include Blackbear Bosin Academy for students in 7th - 9th grades and three Metro-Alternative high schools for students in 9th- 12th grades. Alternative schools are available for students needing more one-on-one instructional help, flexible schedules or help catching up on credits. Parents need to apply directly through the alternative school office since admission into the alternative schools is determined by the building principal.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS Special programs may be explored in many of our middle and high schools. Admission into a secondary school with a special program is handled directly through the school and not through the Magnet Admissions Office.
