AVID Points of Pride
The Wichita Public Schools' AVID program, staff, and students have received many accolades. See the Points of Pride including accomplishments, scholarships and community service initiatives.
· North High Schools and Pleasant Valley Middle School are National AVID Demonstration sites
· North and Pleasant Valley have been named two of AVID’s “Five School-wide Superstars.”
· North and Pleasant Valley are assisting AVID with a nation-wide pilot for a coaching tool for school-wide college readiness.
· The Wichita Public Schools has had three teacher speakers at the Summer Institutes.
· Five AVID students have been speakers at the Summer Institutes
· Neomy Teran, AVID senior at North, is a member of the Kansas State Teacher of the Year selection committee
AVID students and college scholarships
North and Southeast students have the AVID program in their school for four or more years and have produced AVID graduates. With the class of 2009, the Wichita Public Schools has graduated 186 AVID students.

Southeast’s 2009 AVID graduates encumbered close to $100,000.00 in scholarships
AVID students and Community Service:
· AVID students at Mayberry Middle School participate in site-based community service by working at the concession stand at sporting events, ushering at school musical events, and cleaning up the campus.
· Pleasant Valley Middle School AVID students participate in the Leukemia Society’s Pasta for Patients fundraiser and Toys for Tots campaign.
· Hadley Middle School’s AVID classes created and produced videos that featured school-wide AVID strategies including Cornell notes and binder organization.
· The Coleman Middle School AVID students worked during December at Operation Holiday, a community program which provides food, outerwear, and toys during the holiday. The unloaded, sorted, and distributed food in addition to donating food from their food drive.
· Marshall Middle School 8th grade AVID students worked with the Wichita Historical Society and Oakland Avenue Craftsman on the Minisa Street Bridge Restoration Project.
· AVID students at North High School have completed approximately 8000 hours of community service this year with various organizations. Over 300 North High AVID students are paired with over 200 special need students throughout our county
· South High AVID students made Christmas stockings for the students at HeartSpring, a residential home for special need students. They provide no-cost babysitting service during monthly Parent meetings at Lewis Elementary School.
· The AVID students at West High collected food for The Lord’s Diner and toys for Toys for Tots
