AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
The founding principal of AVID is a belief that when held to high standards, and provided academic and social support, students can rise to the challenge of rigorous and college-prep coursework. The AVID program is in several of Wichita's middle and high schools. AVID benefits our students through providing minority and least-served students who are "in the middle" the academic and social support to be successful in rigorous coursework. AVID accomplishes this through enrolling participating students in Honors and AP courses and providing support in an academic elective class taught by an AVID trained teacher. A recent study found that Advanced Placement scores tell colleges more about a student's ability to complete college than other tests.
AVID started in the Wichita Public Schools in 2001 at North High School. The program was so successful that it was placed in the seven comprehensive high schools and 11 middle schools, with plans to expand it to three more middle schools in the 2010-2011 school year. See list of schools with AVID programs.
