Transportation Safety Tips
The following are some general safety tips regarding students who are transported.
- Some buses start picking up students as early as 6:15 a.m. It may be dark at that time, please be aware that young people are out and about during that time.
- Students en route to bus stops during the early morning hours should be dressed appropriately for both weather and visibility.
- Over 400 school buses of different sizes are now sharing the road with other drivers.
- Please be aware that all school buses are to stop at railroad crossings. Many rear-end collisions occur with school buses at railroad crossings.
- Wichita has changed the color of signs for pedestrian crosswalks in school zones to neon yellow. Watch closely for children and others who are using these crosswalks.
- A school bus that has amber lights flashing is preparing to stop.
- A school bus that has red lights flashing and stop arm extended is either picking up or discharging students. Stop at a distance where you as the driver can see the activity around the bus.
- It is against the law to pass a school bus that is stopped with red lights flashing and stop arm extended. The fine is $300.
- The danger zone is the area surrounding a bus that the driver cannot see where a student is located.
- Students are discouraged from crossing behind buses.
- The average (65 passenger) school bus weighs approximately 13 tons.
It is vitally important that everyone think about safety, especially when it comes to children.
