Transportation of Pupils
Transportation services for pupils will be provided for a variety of reasons. The Board of Education shall contract for pupil transportation services.
Administrative Implemental Procedures:
- Pupils will be transported for any or all of the following reasons:
a. Distance (see below)
b.**Recently deleted **
- c. Participation in educational programs (see policy Transportation of Special Education Pupils)
d. Safety (see policy Provision of Transportation Service Because of Hazardous Traveling Conditions)
- USD 259 is not obligated to provide transportation services as a result of a request for special assignment.
- Provision of transportation services for one purpose may serve another purpose. For example, pupils assigned and transported to schools with special programs.
- Transportation shall be provided for pupils who reside at least two and one-half miles from school. However, pupils who have received a special assignment are subject to the provisions of the policy entitled Special Assignment of Pupils.
- Transportation may be furnished at other times when approved by the Board of Education.
- Pupils who ride buses shall be governed by the rules and regulations outlined by the local and/or state departments of pupil transportation.
- Routes and time schedules shall be prepared by the Pupil Transportation Services Department of USD 259. All routes shall be planned in such a manner as to provide the safest walking route for pupils to and from their bus stop. All routes are subject to change. Distances to stops will be regulated as follows:
a. Pupils to be picked up and/or delivered to their address: Special education pupils other than those assigned to "regular" transportation, and kindergarten pupils picked up or delivered at noon only.
b. Pupils to be picked up "at the corner:" Head Start.
c. Pupils to be picked up and delivered at a stop not to exceed two blocks from their residence: Elementary pupils.
d. On or before May 1 each school year, the Superintendent will recommend to the Board the maximum distances to bus stops for elementary alternative education pupils for the upcoming year. These stop distance recommendations will be planned dependent upon the projected availability of vehicles during hours for said schools.
e. Pupils to be picked up and delivered at a stop not to exceed four blocks from their residence: Secondary pupils.
- Seating capacity of buses used by USD 259 shall be limited by state law to 65 pupils. The Supervisor of Pupil Transportation Services shall prescribe limits below 65 pupils.
- USD 259 will be eligible for reimbursement by the State of Kansas for pupils who reside at least two and one-half miles from the public school to which they are assigned.
- Nonreimbursable pupils may be permitted to ride USD 259 school buses under the conditions set forth in Board policy entitled Transporting Nonreimbursable Pupils.
