Substitute Nursing is a very important and rewarding job. You will use your knowledge and along with training provided from the Health Services Office can help our kids be the best they can be. You must be flexible and willing to deal with a diverse population.
PROCEDURES TO BECOME A SUBSTITUTE
SCHOOL NURSE
Thank you for your interest in Substitute School Nursing.
As a Substitute Nurse you must be:
- A Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas
- Certified in BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program

1. CERTIFICATION OF HEALTH: Certification of Health consists of a TB test and light physical that must be performed by a Physician, Physician Assistant (PA), or an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP). Click here for Certificate of Health form.
2. RN LICENSE: Current Kansas RN license
3. CPR/BLS CERTIFICATION: Current certification of BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED)

5. APPLICATION: Applications must be submitted online. The email address you provide will become your contact email. Proceed to the Employment tab at www.usd259.com and select “Start an application for employment”.

When items 1 through 5 above have been received by Human Resources,
you will then be notified of the next Nurse Orientation.
6. NURSE ORIENTATION: - You will be notified of the date for this 3 hour (unpaid) session by Health Services. You will learn policies and procedures for the role of the School Nurse including:
1. Medication procedures
2. Communicable disease policies
3. How to treat the student with minor symptoms
7. DISTRICT EMPLOYEE PROCESSING: The date and time of this 3 ½ hour (unpaid) Processing Session will be given to you at the Nurse Orientation (#6 above). Drivers License and Social Security Card are REQUIRED.
8. SCHOOL “HANDS ON” EXPERIENCE: You will “shadow” a School Nurse in the health room for 3 hours (unpaid).
Completing these 8 requirements will finalize the prerequisites for
Substitute School Nursing in Wichita Public Schools.
