Subject: Returning Licensed Substitute Requirements
The Substitute Teachers Office extends a warm thank you for your assistance in the 2007-2008
school year and an invitation to continue your employment as a substitute teacher for the
2008-2009 school year. Substitutes are a vital part of our program and we welcome the opportunity
to continue working with you. Please read the information in this letter carefully as
there have been several changes made to the substitute program in order to better serve
you and our schools.
The most significant change is the addition of Human Resources new automated application
system AppliTrack. All new applicants are now required to complete an on-line application. This
change also gives new teacher applicants the capability to complete the Gallup Teacher
Insight Assessment as part of the application process. Teacher Insight is required for all new
Wichita Public School teaching applicants. Results from this assessment will provide us greater
insight into the applicant’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors concerning teaching in an urban
setting. Beginning this coming school year, ALL SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS must complete the
(up to one hour) on-line Gallup Teacher Insight Assessment. In order to update our records and
access the Teacher Insight Assessment we need all substitute teachers to submit a new external
on-line application. Although you have been a district employee during the 2007-2008 school year,
we need you to complete your application as an external applicant not an internal applicant.
When completing your external application, under “Current Applicant Status” please select “No, I am
not currently an employee of Wichita Public Schools.” This is what will drive you to complete
the Teacher Insight Assessment; the internal application does not do this. If you elect not to
complete this process by August 1, 2008 your employment as a substitute teacher will be
terminated and you will be eligible to reapply at anytime, however you will be required to attend
a two-day orientation.
The most exciting change is the one we’ve made regarding the returning substitute meeting
requirement. At the request of many substitutes there will no longer be a formal meeting! Instead
of attending a meeting you will be able to access the substitute website and complete all returning substitute requirements on-line. All returning substitutes will be able to do this at their own convenience on any computer with internet access. The deadline for completing this process in order to substitute for the 2008-2009 school year is August 1, 2008.
You will also want to be aware that the SubFinder automated phone number is changing to 973-4774. Please make note of the new phone number and begin using it immediately. The old number of
973- 0321 will be disabled on July 1, 2008.

You will be required to complete the following forms:
1) Blood borne Pathogen Refresher (view film via link and electronically sign form)
2) Substitute Teacher Expectations
3) 08/09 Continuous Growth Goals
4) Letter of Intent
5) If applicable, renew your license online with KSDE and upload to your external application. This applies to any Substitute whose license has expired. For licensure questions call the Certification Technician at 973-4619.

Minimum 10-day waiver
If you did not meet the ten-day minimum requirement of teaching for the 2007-2008, but would like special consideration in order to sub for the 2008-2009 school year please submit a letter to the Sub Office at 201 N. Water, Wichita, KS 67202. The waiver letter should articulate a specific reason for not meeting the requirement and state that you intend to meet the requirement for this upcoming year.
If you do not have access to a computer, there are kiosks with computers available at the following locations: Human Resources, 201 N. Water, the School Service Center, 3850 N. Hydraulic, and the Midtown Community Resource Center, 1150 N. Broadway. Computer access can also be obtained at all public libraries.
Once all of these forms have been completed and all requirements are met, you will be activated on the SubFinder system and will have access through the phone system and SubFinder online for the 2008-2009 school year.
All required documents for returning subs must be completed no later than
August 1, 2008 otherwise you will need to complete the rehire process and attend a
1-2 day orientation/processing session.
