Police-School Programs
"A partnership in student education and safety"

Michele Zahner, Supervisor

The district office of Police-School Programs coordinates, in cooperation with the Wichita Police Department, the School Liaison Officers and School Resource Officers that work, teach, mentor and play a vital role in maintaining a safe schools environment across our district.
Since 1978, officers from the Wichita Police Department have made thousands of classroom presentations that increase student awareness of citizen's rights and
responsibilities under the law, while fostering positive attitudes toward police officers and law enforcement in general.
Police-School Liaison Officers are dedicated to providing students with law-related and prevention education at the elementary level. Last year alone, Liaison Officers presented to over 60,000 Wichita students on the topics of Law Related Education, D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T.
In 1997, the School Resource Officer (SRO) Program was established in an effort to positively impact as many of our youth as possible. The SRO program places a police officer in each middle and high school to serve as a mentor, counselor, educator and to enforce the law on school grounds. In addition to an extensive list of prevention and law related education programs offered by the SROs at their buildings, they also are certified to teach G.R.E.A.T. at the middle school level.
