The Wichita Public Schools offer foreign language instruction as an integral part of a well-rounded education for the 21st century. Languages taught are Chinese, French, German and Spanish.
At the elementary level, Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet offers content-based instruction in Spanish from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. See their website (http://horacemann.usd259.org) for more information on their program.
At the middle and high school levels, the goals of foreign language instruction are for students to:
- Use linguistic skills for communicative purposes in listening, speaking, reading and writing the target language.
- Demonstrate insight into and appreciation of another culture.
- Demonstrate insight into and appreciation of their own culture.
- Increase knowledge of English vocabulary and structure.
- Participate in cooperative interactions and multilingual groups.
- Demonstrate higher-level thinking skills through such activities as comparing and contrasting, making inferences, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating.
The structure and availability of foreign language programs varies at the secondary level. Individual schools can provide a specific description of course offerings.
Course standards for middle school programs are the same as French I, German I and Spanish I at the high school level, but more time is given for younger students to achieve these goals. These standards are available by clicking on the links below:
