The Wichita Public schools offer a comprehensive interscholastic athletic program for both high school and middle school students. Each year, many high school athletes are offered full or partial scholarships to college based on participation in their high school athletic programs. Some have gone on to become well know college, Olympic, and professional athletes, like Lynette Woodard, Barry Sanders, and Jim Ryun. However, the primary goal of the athletic program is to maximize participation and the learning activities that accompany team membership.

Track & Field | Current Participation:
Over 6467 students participated in either middle school or high school interscholastic athletics during the 2008-2009 school year. Approximately 35% of high school students participate in two or three sports over the course of a school year.
Basic Eligibility Guidelines:
* Must pass five new subjects in the preceding semester.
* Must be a bona fide, undergraduate member of his/her school, in good standing and be enrolled in a minimum of five new subjects during the current semester. * Prior to practice or tryouts, potential student athletes must have a current physical exam (dated 5-1-08 or after) and a parental consent form on file. Please pick up form PPE from your base school, or download the form using the attached file. form-ppe-pdf
Participation Fee:
The program is primarily funded by Wichita Board of Education allocations and gate receipts. However, in order to continue offering 21 sports, a small participation fee is required at the high school level. The once-per-year fee is $50, regardless of the number of sports a student participates in. If a student qualifies for free/reduced lunch, the fee is reduced to $25 and $15.
