Stucky Middle School

We are pleased to offer a quality learning experience for neighborhood students, grades 6-8. Our teachers are highly qualified in their subject areas and know that students need to focus on learning in the classroom. Students are expected to make positive choices with both learning and school behaviors that will help them achieve a quality education. At Stucky, we have high expectations for students and staff in all that we do!

Learning is the focus at Stucky! Our school vision statement, "A Transformation to Greatness, through Academic Excellence, Impeccable Conduct, and Tremendous Effort" exemplifies our beliefs. We use a seven period schedule, composed of:  Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and three Exploratory classes. Stucky students receive a strong curriculum emphasis in the classrooms that will allow them to be successful on state reading, writing, and math assessments for No Child Left Behind.

Stucky students are given opportunities in and out of the classroom and get involved in a wide variety of activities that will help them discover their talents and abilities. Stucky offers exploratory classes (Vocal and Band/Strings, Physical Education, Art, Drama, Speech, TV Productions, and Technology), an After-School Program (including tutoring), sports, (Cross-Country, Volleyball, Basketball and Track), National Academic League, Principal's Advisory Council, Science Olympiad, dances and many other exciting programs. We encourage our students to participate in school functions that further their growth.

Our school motto for the 2008-2009 school year is "No Family Left Behind". It is very important for our families to be involved in their child's education. Therefore, we have placed a Stucky Storm chair in every classroom so that parents can visit their student's learning environment. Also as a part of this initiative, we will have "Muffins with Mom" and "Donuts with Dad". This time will be set aside so that parents can come to school and have breakfast with their child. "Coffee with the Principal" will provide a time for parents to interact with the principal and stay connected to their child's school. Quarterly, we have a Greatness Breakfast wherein students on the Honor Roll are invited along with their family to have breakfast and celebrate the student's academic success.

• All School Musical-performed 'HONK Jr.' and 'Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Jr.' Fiddler on the Roof Jr. will be performed in the Fall 2008 All School Musical.

• The 7th and 8th grade Orchestra has received the "Award of Excellence" at City Festival for 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008

Stucky Middle School believes that all students can learn and achieve their potential through reading, writing and math skills improvement.

• All students will read effectively by identifying details, making inferences, determining central ideas and using other comprehension strategies.
• All students will increase their skills through written communication.
• All students will show improvement in computing, problem solving and other mathematical concepts related to problem solving and computation.

The Stucky Site Council is composed of parents, community members, business representatives, teachers and other school staff.  Site councils identify, consider and discuss educational problems and issues at the school.  Everyone is invited to attend on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Stucky Library.

Parent/Teacher/Student Organization (PTSO)

The Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO) is an advisory group, which meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Library during the school year.  Activities involve projects that will help support student learning and helping the school be more productive.

Stucky Middle School offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of students. Stucky has a Gifted Program, as well as an Interrelated and Severely Mentally Disabled Program (SMD). We also provide Advanced Skills and Intervention classes according to students' needs.

Elective classes include 3 levels of Spanish, Vocal Music, 3 levels of band, Orchestra, Physical Education, Robotics, Video Production, Speech, TV Production/News Paper, Art, and Drama.

The ACT Explore is administered to both the seventh and eighth grade students. The ACT Explore test prepares students to take the ACT in high school and also has a career component that assists student sin course selection in their area of interest.

Our instrumental and vocal groups perform at functions around the community such as Wichita Wrangler games, Friends University Festivals, USD 259 Good Apple Awards as well as other organizations.

Stucky Middle School opened in Fall 2003. Stucky was named after Dean R. Stucky, a prominent educator in Wichita for many years. He was instrumental in working witht curriculum, staff and diversity for many years in his leadership positions including Deputy Superintendent. His wife, Hilda, was a teacher at Southest High School.

Stucky was a part of the $284.5 million Bond Issue under the direction of Former Superintendent Winston Brooks. Koch Industries donated 40 acres for the middle school, the first built in Wichita in 35 years. Construction began in 2002 and was completed in Fall 2003. Ken Jantz, Stucky's first principal, supervised final building construction. The school was built to hold 600 students, but the Koch Auditorium and the large gym can accommodate 800, allowing for expansion. The school was expanded in 2006, with the addition of 13 classrooms. Stucky's design includes 3 pods, each containing the core classes for a grade level. The first class to complete all three grades at Stucky was promoted to high school in May 2006.

Terrell Davis was appointed principal in August 2006, initiatives under his direction include a partnership with Southwestern College, and partnerships with Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. The Southwestern College partnership began in 2006, and every Stucky alumni who is accepted at Southwestern College is promised a $25,000 scholarship.
