Lincoln CIS Coordinator Receives National Recognition |
David Larson, Communities In Schools site coordinator at Lincoln Elementary, has been selected as one of seven national recipients of the “Unsung Hero Award” through CIS National Offices. The award is given to those who reflect the core values of CIS, including personal commitment, accountability, persistence, equality and coordination. Communities In Schools connects children and families with existing services and resources to help them successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. |

District receives second award from EPA |
The Wichita Public Schools has received the prestigious Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools 2007 Model of Sustained Excellence Award for its efforts to improve indoor air quality in our schools. Wichita was one of five districts across the country to be honored with the award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. |

District receives Award of Excellence from Envision |
The Wichita Public Schools has received the 2007 “Award of Excellence in Support of Employment” on April 24, 2007, from Envision, Inc. Superintendent Winston Brooks, Board of Education Vice President Lynn Rogers and Operations Division Director accepted the award during a luncheon on April 24. Wichita Public Schools received the award because the district purchases all of its trash can liners from Envision. |

Homeless program receives check from realtors |
The Wichita Public Schools' Homeless program received a check for nearly $6,000 from Plaza Real Estate. An oversized check was presented to Sue Steele, Homeless Liaison, on April 17. Realtor Paul Daemen came up with the fundraising idea himself. After hearing about the district's homeless population, he began asking for donations from other realtors in Wichita and across the country. |

District receives two grants for safe rooms |
The Wichita Public Schools received two grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to build safe rooms for the new Earhart Elementary and the new K-8 school that will be located at 2201 E. 25th Street North. FEMA recently approved $140,700 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for the design and construction of a tornado shelter for Earhart and $178,000 for the new K-8 school building. |
