Southeast student selected for Dreamers Academy |
Kenneth Sellers, freshman at Southeast High School, is one of the recipients of the first Disney’s Dreamers Academy, sponsored by Walt Disney World and comedian Steve Harvey. Sellers was one of 100 students across the country selected by Harvey and a panel of judges. The students were nominated by parents, friends, schools, churches or other organizations for their power to dream. |

Southeast student named Academic All State |
Marissa Quillin, student at Southeast High School, has been honored for excelling in the classroom and in athletics. Quillin was named to the Academic All-State Cross Country Team by the Kansas Cross-Country and Track and Field Coaches Association. This is the second year she has made the Academic All-State team. |

Three West Students HOSA State Officers |
Three students from West High School have been named state officers for Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). Miesha Brison was named state vice president, Allyson Fowler is state secretary and Skyla Jordan is state historian. West is the only high school in the district with a HOSA chapter. HOSA is a national student organization that promotes career opportunities in the health care industry. |

North Student Receives National Hispanic Recognition |
Heather Smith, senior at North High School, has been named to the National Hispanic Recognition Program. The program is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and connects them to colleges and universities. Smith qualified for the program by scoring high on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test and maintaining a high grade point average. |

North JROTC Cadets Honored with Leadership Award, 10/11/2007 |
Four North High School JROTC cadets have received the George C. Marshall Leadership Award. Sharayah Hernandez, Chonna Gomez, David McCormack and Eva Arevalo will participate in the George C. Marshall Leadership Symposium in Lexington, VA October 11-13. North was one of two high schools selected out of 57 JROTC programs in an 8-state area from the Midwest. |

Jack Frederick, 2006 graduate of North High School, has been selected as the National SkillsUSA President. SkillsUSA is a national organization that partners students, teachers, and industry members with the goal of creating a more skilled and leadership-focused workforce. Frederick is currently majoring in automotive technology at Pittsburg State University. |

Wilbur student attends World Leadership Forum |
Christopher Miller, student at Wilbur Middle School, attended the People to People World Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. Miller was picked to join the more than 600 students from across the globe to attend the forum. He was nominated by his fifth-grade teacher, Lori Kersten. |

Middle and high school students participated at the Kansas Student Technology Leadership Digital Media Competitions at Kansas State University. The students competed in many categories as individuals or in teams. |

West students win gold at health occupations competition |
Four students at West High won gold during the scholars bowl team event at the Health Occupations Students Association (HOSA) State Competition held in Topeka. The team includes seniors Lateece Griffin and Rosalina Valdovinos, and juniors Brittany Burress and Consuelo Andrade. Griffin also won the silver medal in Medical Terminology, and Burress captured bronze in Medical Spelling. Senior Krystal Scheidt, won the silver medal in the Nursing Assistant competition. |

Emerson student wins Tot Trot t-shirt contest |
Paige Minor, second-grade student at Emerson Open Magnet, was honored on April 26 for drawing the winning t-shirt design for the Wichita River Festival's Tot Trot. She was the first-place award winner for the 5 - 7 age division and the overall Tot Trot artwork winner. Her design was chosen from more than 1,600 entries. |

Spring Good Apple recipients recognized |
More than 400 people, representing 65 schools, support centers and business partners were recognized on April 16 for receiving the Good Apple Award. The Board of Education recognized the recipients during a special ceremony at Northwest High School. The Good Apple Awards program allows schools and administrative support centers to recognize employees, volunteers and school partners who go the extra step in helping the school district and its students to succeed. |

Sowers student artwork displayed in Washington, DC |
Breshon McCarty, student at Sowers Special Education Center, won first place at the Congressional Art Competition: An Artistic Discovery. The competition allows members of the U.S. House of Representatives the opportunity to showcase the talents of high school students within their districts. Breshon's artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for a year and he receives a $500 prize for winning the district-wide contest. |

Students named Unsung Heroes by Optimists |
Several students were named Unsung Heroes by the Optimist Club. The students were nominated by each of their high school counselors. The Unsung Hero Awards recognize students who have overcome obstacles in their lives, but continue to work towards their high school diploma and set their sites on post-secondary education. The students received a certificate and a cash award. |

Two students named National Scholastic Art winners |
Liz Wheeler, student at East High School, and Kody Raney, student at Truesdell Middle School, have been named Gold Key winners in the National Scholastic Art Competition in New York City. Raney is the only middle school student in Kansas to receive the Gold Key. The Gold Key is the highest honor given. |

McLean student tops in Kansas Reflections Contest |
William Draper, first-grade student at McLean Science & Technology Magnet, was named the State Award of Excellence winner in the Kansas PTA Reflections Contest. Draper won the Primary division of the Film/Video category for his video, “The Downtown Library.” |

JROTC cadets chosen for honorary board |
The freshman JROTC Honorary Cadet Board was conducted on April 10. Eight JROTC cadets answered questions on leadership, citizenship, current events and customs. The cadets who went before the board were Jonathon Downs, West; William Hood, South; Andrew Coldiron, Southeast; Ashlie Tracy, East; Erica Scantlin, North; Amanda Swanson, Northwest; Chelsea Trout, Heights and Charles Shirley, Northeast. Chelsea Trout was selected as the Honorary Cadet. |

Twenty-eight students receive 99% Awards |
Twenty-eight middle and high school students were recognized by the Board of Education during the 99% Awards ceremony for the third quarter on April 2. The 99% Awards recognize students who are making a contribution to their school by receiving good grades and having at least 90% attendance, but who may not be getting the recognition they deserve for doing the right thing. |

District theatre students receive Cornucopia Award |
Student members with the Wichita Area Thespians received the 2006 Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat Cornucopia Award from the Educational Theatre Association and the International Thespian Society. Students collected 8,195 pounds of food that will be distributed locally. The students received the national award for the most food collected by a team. |

West student bowls at state, despite challenges |
Marina Schlorch, freshman at West High School, qualified to bowl in the state tournament. What sets her apart from the other seven on West's bowling team who qualified for state is Schlorch bowls from a horizontal wheelchair. Schlorch, who has spina bifida, finished 53rd out of 73 bowlers in the tournament. |

Heights student to bowl in All-American championship |
Lyndsey Prather, senior at Heights High School, has been selected to bowl in the Denny’s All-American High School Championships. Prather was the only student in Kansas who was selected to participate in the championships, which will be held March 23-25 in Grand Rapids, MI. |

Metro-Midtown students rewarded for achievements |
Metro-Midtown Alternative High School honored students for their achievements during their annual Cessna Flying Colors Awards Ceremony, held on February 9. The Cessna Flying Colors program gives monetary incentives to students with good grades and attendance. Students are also required to make good lifestyle choices and perform 10 hours of community service. |
