Recognition in the latest edition of US News & World Report “America’s Best High Schools”. This publication ranked Northeast Magnet as a Bronze Level School and the only school in Sedgwick County to earn a ranking. |

Southeast and Jackson receive $100,000 grants from Cox |
Southeast High School and Jackson Elementary each received a $100,000 grant from Cox Communications to support increased student achievement and narrowing of the achievement gap. Events were held at both schools on Dec. 6 to thank Cox for the donation. |

Peterson receives Healthy School Award |
Peterson Elementary was recognized for its efforts to encourage healthy eating habits and exercise. Peterson received the first Healthy School Award presented by the Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita. Peterson received a $1,000 grant for its project, "Healthy Treats for Happy Feet." Jessica Tarbell with the Health and Wellness Coalition presented the check to principal Mason Enterline during an all-school assembly to kick off the program. |

Truesdell quilt on display at Wichita Art Museum, 1/6/2007 |
A quilt created by Truesdell Middle School students is on display at the Wichita Art Museum through January 6. Sherry Waters, art teacher at Truesdell, five students, and Michele Isaac of the Prairie Quilt Guild worked after school for more than a month to create a quilt for Oprah Winfrey’s School for girls in South Africa. The quilt was designed to be an encouragement for the girls and their education. |

Twenty Education EDGE mini-grants awarded |
Teachers from 17 schools received 20 mini-grants totaling $81,721 from the Education EDGE. Each of these mini-grants will be used in the 2007-2008 school year. |

Pleasant Valley Middle tops in River Run |
Students, staff and families of Pleasant Valley Middle School gathered to participate in the Wichita River Festival River Run on May 12. The school won first-place in the School/Church/Civic group category for having the most participants. This is the second year Pleasant Valley Middle School received the distinction. The school had 45 participation the River Run, more than double the participants from last year. |

South project benefits Down Syndrome Society |
Woodworking students at South High School just completed a project that will help families know more about Down Syndrome. The students created brochure holders for the Down Syndrome Society. The students have completed 25 holders, with plans of 25 more being made next year. The brochure holders will be placed at hospitals and doctors' offices in Wichita and surrounding areas. South will also display two of the holders. They will contain information about the society and how parents of children with Down Syndrome can get support. |

Four schools receive Reading Rocks gift from Junior League |
Bryant, Cessna, Earhart and Minneha elementary schools will be able to purchase books for their libraries, thanks to a gift from Junior League of Wichita. The Junior League will fund the Reading Rocks: Literacy for Lifelong Learning project for a second year. The Junior League will donate $62,500 for the 2007-2008 school year for those schools to purchase library books. |

Jardine and Colvin get books and gifts from Boeing |
Jardine and Colvin have received more items from Boeing, their school partner. On May 10, Boeing announced it was donating books, computer monitors and gifts to be used as student incentives, along with a $1,300 check for library books to both schools. Boeing has adopted Jardine and Colvin, along with two schools in Derby |

Toyota reading grant will benefit three schools |
Park, Stanley and Colvin Elementary Schools celebrated a $600,000 three-year grant their schools received during an event at Park on April 25. The Toyota Family Literacy Program, a partnership with the Wichita Public Schools, Toyota, Wichita State University and the National Center for Family Literacy, is a unique program aimed at boosting the literacy skills of ESOL children and their parents. Wichita was one of five districts across the U.S. to receive the grant. |

Anderson receives TRC grant |
Anderson Elementary was award the Technology Rich Classroom grant from the Kansas Department of Education. The two-year, $100,000 grant, funded primarily through the federal Enhancing Education through Technology Grant program, is designed to focus on content areas of reading, math and science. |

Northeast chess team is tenth in the nation |
Northeast Magnet High School's Chess Team competed April 14 in the National Chess Tournament held in Kansas City. The team placed tenth in the nation. In March, Northeast’s chess team placed first in the 6A state chess championship. |

Grant will help make walk to Harry Street safer |
Students and community members walking by Harry Street Elementary will soon be able to enjoy safer walking conditions, thanks to a grant from Safe Kids Worldwide and FedEx. The two groups presented Harry Street an oversized $10,000 check on April 4 and explained the improvements. Safe Kids Wichita Area selected the streets around Harry Street to receive the improvements because there were a large amount of pedestrian accidents, both child and adult, in the past three years in that area of town. |

Kelly Elementary honored for customer service |
Kelly Elementary received the Spring 2007 Red Carpet Award for Excellent Customer Service, presented by the Parent and Community Support Office. The school staff and students were surprised with the award on April 12. Superintendent Winston Brooks presented the school the $500 award during an all-school assembly. |

Heights and Robinson groups perform at convention |
Heights High School's Jazz Band and Robinson Middle School's 7th and 8th Grade Girls Choir were selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educator's Association convention at Century II. The two groups submitted audition tapes and were selected from entries across Kansas. The groups performed in-between the convention's workshops. |

Students from Allen Elementary participated in the Odyssey of the Mind Regional Tournament on March 3. Allen was one of 29 teams from different districts who participated. |

Northeast Magnet’s chess team placed first in the 6A state chess championship. The chess team competed against teams from across the state on March 10 at Maize High School |

Heights girls have championship repeat |
The Heights High School girls’ basketball team finished another great season by winning the class 6A state championship. This is second consecutive year the Heights girls team has won the championship title. The Falcons defeated Olathe South 54-34 in Emporia. |

Students participate in Circle of Friends variety show, 3/10/2007 |
Students from seven district schools and surrounding school districts participated in the Circle of Friends Heart and Music City-Wide Variety Show on March 10. The Circle of Friends program pairs regular education students to act as mentors and friends with special education students. During the variety show, the students performed dances, songs, raps and skits. In addition to the show, art from students with disabilities was displayed. |

Anderson Elementary was named the Best Place to Work in the school division for 2007. The Wichita Business Journal sponsors the competition. The winners were announced at a banquet on March 8 at the Hyatt Regency |

Schools receive technology grants from Best Buy |
Teachers at College Hill, L’Ouverture and Anderson received grants from Best Buy to purchase technology for their schools. The three grants are worth $2,500 each. |

Heights girls basketball ranked 14 in the U.S. |
The Heights High School girls basketball team is ranked number 14 in the country by USA Today. The girls team is 17-1 this year. USA Today also lists the Heights vs. Bishop Carroll game as its Game of the Week. |

Metro-Boulevard magazine recognized for excellence |
Metro-Boulevard Alternative High School's student magazine, Metro Literary Review, received a rank of Excellent from the 2006 NCTE Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines. The magazine was noted for its quality of writing, design and graphics and the students' role in producing it. Metro-Boulevard also received a rank of Excellent in 2005. |
