North High School Teacher named finalist for 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year |
Stacie Valdez, language arts teacher at North High School, has been named a finalist for the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year. The state of Kansas named Valdez as a finalist for the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year. As a finalist, Valdez became a member of the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year team, which travels the state promoting and advocating for education and the teaching profession. |

Eight teachers receive National Board Certification |
Eight teachers have earned the profession's top honor of National Board Certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward great teachers and is the most prestigious credential a teacher can earn. WPS currently has 24 National Board Certified teachers and 133 candidates have completed the GYOT program. |

Heights P.E. teacher named Teacher of the Year |

McNiece named KASSP Principal of the Year |
Jim McNiece, principal at Northwest High School, has been named the MetLife High School Principal of the Year by the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals. McNiece was nominated for the award by fellow principals and school staff. Candidates are evaluated on their school leadership, school improvement, dedication, professionalism and service to students. |

Sandy Peer Receives State Award from Wal-Mart |
Sandy Peer, former math teacher at Northwest, has been named the top teacher in Kansas by Wal-Mart. She received her Kansas Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award during an all-school pep rally on Oct. 11. During the assembly, Wal-Mart presented Northwest with a $10,000 educational grant. |

Truesdell SRO Named Champion of Respect |
Officer Shane Russell, School Resource Officer at Truesdell Middle School, has been selected as a 2007 Champion of Respect from the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center. He was nominated by Diana Peak, assistant principal at Truesdell. Officer Russell will be honored during the Choose Respect program on Oct. 11 at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. |

Wilbur Teacher Receives Foreign Language Award |
Joanna Lord, Spanish teacher at Wilbur Middle School, has received the Loren Alexander Award by the Kansas World Language Association. The award is given to outstanding first-year teachers, as well as future foreign language teachers. |

Truesdell teacher receives $500 award |
Jennifer Howard, science teacher at Truesdell Middle School, was awarded the 2007 Wendell G. Mohling Foundation Award. Representatives from the foundation presented her with a $500 check in her classroom on August 27. The scholarship can be used to attend a regional or national Science Teacher Association conference of her choosing. Howard said she will use the award to attend the national convention in Boston. |

Superintendent Receives Friends of the Family Award |
Superintendent Winston Brooks received a Friends of the Family Award. The award is given to individuals, organizations and businesses that serve to enhance families and race relations in Kansas. Superintendent Brooks was presented the award during a luncheon at the Kansas Black Expo in Topeka. |

Kelly teacher on NEA Board of Directors |
Verlean Brown, special education teacher at Kelly, has been named to the NEA Board of Directors. She was selected by Kansas NEA members to represent teachers on a national level. Brown is the first teacher from Wichita selected for the position and the first minority from Kansas to serve on the NEA Board of Directors. |

Twenty-two teachers have received the Golden Apple Award from KAKE-TV, Papa John's Pizza and Davis-Moore Auto Group during the 2006-2007 school year. The Golden Apple Recipients are teachers who are nominated by school staff, parents and community members to showcase their contribution to the classroom. The teachers each received $250, a pizza party, a golden apple trophy and was featured on KAKE. |

Tiffany Nickel, interrelated teacher at Jackson Elementary, is the recipient of the 2007 Excellence in Public Service Award. The award is given to an employee of the district, the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County who shows excellence in their job responsibilities and who is actively involved with the community. |

Teachers receive recognition from Wal-Mart |
Three teachers have been named Teacher of the Year from area Wal-Mart stores. Patti Posey, 2/3-grade teacher at Earhart Environmental Magnet, Amy Brown, vocal music teacher at Wilbur Middle School and Sandy Peer, math teacher at Northwest High School, each received the award. Each one was surprised at their school with the award. |

Friends of Education recognized |
The 2007 Friends of Education Awards were presented on April 21 during a banquet at Heights High School. The Friends of Education Awards, presented by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force, recognize the outstanding work of dedicated school volunteers across the state. Districts submit nominations for school volunteer, community leader, community/civic organization, partner activity, and private/public institution awards. There were six 2007 recipients from the Wichita Public Schools. |

South teacher receives Pike Award |
Catherine Johnson, math teacher at South High School, received the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge Teacher of the Year award. Johnson was honored during a reception at the Masonic Lodge on April 20. The Albert Pike Award is given to teachers whose lessons go beyond the classroom and into the community. |

Faflick receives State Award of Merit |
Bill Faflick, Athletic Director, has received the 2007 National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association State Award of Merit. The award recognizes leadership and long-term contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local and state levels. The State Award of Merit recognizes an athletic director in each state and the District of Columbia. |

Staff member goes to third round on American Inventor |
Merrie East, administrative assistant in Payroll, made it through the third round of the American Inventor television show. Her invention was in the top 70 of more than 3,000 applicants, but East was not selected to go further. |

Allen and Greiffenstien teachers receive music honors |
Susan McHugh and Nancy Rose, adaptive music teachers in the district, have both been named Educator of the Year in Arts and Disabilities. The honor is given by Accessible Arts, Inc. and the Kansas State Board of Education. McHugh is based at Allen and Rose is based at Greiffenstein, but they both serve students in several schools in the district. |

Bryant early childhood teachers honored for best practices |
Bryant teachers Alicia Whitbeck, early childhood special education, and Audrey Hefling, prekindergarten, received a Best Practice in Early Childhood Special Education grant. The $1,000 grant was given by the KU Center on Developmental Disabilities. The grant was on inclusionary classrooms and Bryant was one of two prekindergarten inclusion programs selected in Kansas for the grant. |
