Nineteen students named National Merit semi-finalists
The National Merit Scholarship competition has named nineteen semi-finalists. Eighteen of those students attend East High School, one attends Northwest High School.
The 2009 National Merit Semi-Finalists are Norin Ansari, Alex Applegate, Joanna Behrman, Christa Carroll, Leanna Duncan, Matthew Heck, Tiffany Hwang, Dong Kim, Serena Liu, Andrew Lowe, Daniel Overholt, Alexandra Pepoon, Nathan Riley, Keeler Russell, Michael Seis, Katherine Thomas, Wennie Wang and Connie Yang, East High School, and Sean Noble, Northwest High School.

Students become National Merit semi-finalists by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) during their junior year and scoring in the top one-half of 1 percent in the state. Students become National Merit finalists through an application process and completing the SAT. Scholarship winners will be chosen on the basis of academic skills and achievements, extracurricular accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring.
