Gammon parent and volunteer recognized by President Bush for service
Buddy Shannon, Gammon Elementary parent, site council member and volunteer, was recognized by President George W. Bush when he visited Wichita on May 4. Shannon received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his work with the Real Men, Real Heroes, program. The program introduces students to local African-American men who are role models in the community to counter negative images shown on TV, in sports and in music.
“When I received a phone call from the White House telling me I was going to receive the award, I was blown away,” Shannon said.
“I accept this honor on behalf of all of the men involved in Real Men, Real Heroes. I am honored and humbled by this.”
Shannon often visits Gammon to speak to children as part of Real Men, Real Heroes and volunteers at the school. On May 2, he shared his good news with a fifth-grade class. He challenged them to follow his example and to be a good role model in the choices they make, the friends they have and by showing respect for themselves and others. Shannon told them that every generation makes sacrifices for the next generation and he believes that children are our greatest asset.
“He’s an awesome guy,” said Symeon Williams, fifth-grade student at Gammon who is mentored by Shannon. “I wish I could be like him when I get big.”
