Wichita enrollment is up by more than 400 students
The Wichita Public Schools has taken its official headcount of students enrolled for the 2008-2009 school year. The district’s enrollment as of Sept. 22 is 49,146 students, an increase of 441 students more than last year’s enrollment of 48,705. To see enrollment at each school, click here.
"This is great news, and of great importance to The Wichita Public Schools. This demonstrates confidence in public education and the job we are doing, and also reinforces the need for expanded facilities to serve growth and reduce class size," said Superintendent Martin Libhart.
This is only the fifth time in the last three decades that enrollment has risen above 49,000 students. The last time the district exceeded 49,000 students in 2000-2001. Click here to watch a news conference about the enrollment increase.
Each year, Kansas’ school districts are required by the state to take an official headcount of students enrolled on Sept. 20. Full-time equivalency (FTE), the enrollment on which state funding is based, will be calculated from this official count.
With increased student enrollment, the district still is focused on student achievement. Earlier this month it was announced that 13 more schools achieved AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) in 2008 than did in 2007, and the number of middle schools making AYP in 2008 nearly tripled, despite targets increasing significantly.
