More schools receive Standard of Excellence Awards
36 schools receive Standard of Excellence – 109 awards overall
Thirty-six schools, covering all grade levels, were awarded Standard of Excellence in reading, math and/or science by the Kansas State of Department of Education. Overall, the Wichita Public Schools received 109 Standard of Excellence Awards by grade level and/or building-wide, an increase of 28 more awards than the district received in 2007. Wichita Public Schools has seen an increase in schools receiving Standard of Excellence Awards every year since the awards began in 2003. The complete list is below.
“This is even more evidence that our students are achieving,” said Dr. Denise Seguine, Chief Academic Officer. “We want to celebrate that not only are our students meeting and exceeding the state’s continually rising Adequate Yearly Progress targets, they are going above and beyond to receive Standard of Excellence.”
The Standard of Excellence Awards were given to 26 elementary schools, one K-8 school, five middle schools and 4 high schools. Of those schools, eight received Title I services in 2007-2008, showing that schools across our district are achieving academic excellence.
One of the schools that received Standard of Excellence is Marshall Middle School, which achieved Standard of Excellence in seventh-grade reading. More than 84-percent of Marshall students qualify for free or reduced lunch and nearly half of the students are ESOL, yet students who were in the “exemplary” category increased by more than 10 percent.
“We have made a big push with reading,” said Marshall principal Mark Jolliffe. “We have our students read every night and we emphasize reading and vocabulary in every class and we’ve made growth.”
“Our kids are here to achieve and they have big dreams and we work hard so they can have a successful future,” he said.
Standard of Excellence is based on Kansas state assessment data. For a school to receive Standard of Excellence, a certain percentage of students must score exemplary on the assessments and only a small percentage of students be placed on academic warning. The percentage varies by grade level.
In September, KSDE released the schools that made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as required by No Child Left Behind. The Wichita Public Schools had 60 schools that made AYP, 13 more than in 2007. That’s an increase of 16%, compared to the state of Kansas increase of 1%.
