Parents' guide to understanding the choices featured in the approved plan
"What Does This Mean To Me?"
| If You Are The Parent Of... |
Then You May Choose To: |
| A current elementary student and you live in the original or peripheral AAA |
- Attend the neighborhood school whose geographic boundary includes your home address. This includes neighborhood magnet schools, but does not include pure magnet schools.
OR
- Remain at your current (2007-08) school, and continue to receive transportation based on established transportation policies. Siblings may choose to attend the same school.
OR
- Apply to Gordon Parks Academy, a neighborhood magnet school whose boundary will be the original/peripheral AAA. Half of the seats at Gordon Parks Academy will be devoted to neighborhood students. Due to capacity concerns, all neighborhood students must still apply through the regular magnet application process and follow all applicable deadlines.
OR
- Apply to any magnet school within the Wichita Public Schools.
* If your student was bused for desegregation in 2007-08 (see Attachment A), priority magnet placement will be given in 2008-09, if space is available.
* Beginning in 2009-10, all students in the original/peripheral AAA will receive priority magnet placement, if space is available. This choice will continue until such time as school capacity issues have been addressed in this area.
NOTE: Applicants must still follow all magnet school guidelines, including the application deadline.
|
| A current middle or high school student and you live in the original AAA |
- Attend the middle and high school to which your home address is assigned. This continues the current district practice of assigning all secondary students who reside in the original AAA, regardless of race, to secondary schools throughout the district due to inadequate capacity within the AAA area. Transportation will continue to be provided.
OR
- Apply to Gordon Parks Academy (middle school students only), a neighborhood magnet school whose boundary will be the original/peripheral AAA. Half of the seats at Gordon Parks Academy will be devoted to neighborhood students. Due to capacity concerns, all neighborhood students must still apply through the regular magnet application process and follow all applicable deadlines.
