Distinguished Classroom Teacher Awards
Wichita Public Schools honors 2009 Distinguished Classroom Teachers

The Distinguished Classroom Teacher Awards program honors outstanding teachers who affect the quality of education in the Wichita Public Schools. The Wichita Public Schools is proud to announce the recipients of the 2009 Distinguished Classroom Teacher Awards in their respective categories:
- Kari Semmel, first-grade teacher, White Elementary - New Teacher, Elementary
- Eryn Elder, ninth-grade English teacher, South High School - New Teacher, Secondary
- Sheri Edgerle, kindergarten teacher, AllenElementary - Primary Teacher (Pre-K through 2)
- Melissa Morgan, third-grade, Dodge Literacy Magnet - Intermediate (3 through 5)
- Rachel Aponso, math teacher, Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet - Middle School
- Ed Morales, history teacher, North High School - High School
- Jane Ridder, speech clinician, Washington Elementary - Support Teacher
The recipients were honored at the March 9, 2009 Board of Education meeting.
During the meeting, it was announced that Sheri Edgerle and Ed Morales will represent the district for the prestigious 2009 Kansas Teacher of the Year award. Kari Semmel and Eryn Elder will represent the district for the Kansas Horizon Award, which recognizes those who do an exemplary job their first year of teaching.
Peers, building administrators or the parents of students may nominate teachers for the award. The nomination window is normally late fall through early January and the forms are posted to this website. A committee consisting of principals, teachers, the assistant superintendents of elementary, middle and high schools and a member of the United Teachers of Wichita select the final recipients.
