Wichita Public Schools 2008 Bond Issue
It's About Our Kids, Our Schools and Our Future
- Smaller classes
- Safer children
- Economic vitality and the future of our community
This bond issue will meet 5 critical needs for the Wichita community and its students
 |
| A tornado in 1999 destroyed parts of Jefferson Elementary School. The school was the first to have a FEMA safe room storm shelter. The bond issue will construct a safe room for the schools that currently don't have one. |
- Reduces class sizes, and addresses overcrowding and growth in key areas of our community
- Builds 60 safe room storm shelters in instructional space additions
- Supports the end to forced busing by providing equitable facilities in the AAA area
- Upgrade technical education programs
- Renovates or rebuilds aging and unsafe physical education, athletic and fine arts facilities
Why Now?
 |
| North High's cinder track is unusable after it rains. All-weather tracks can be used in wet weather and are used by PE classes more than athletic teams. |
- The 2000 bond issue did not address all critical needs
- The community committee that built this plan identified these needs as most important for Wichita students right now!
- The need will intensify for new schools to accommodate growth in northeast and southeast Wichita
- The state will pay 25% of a bond issue passed in Wichita (both principal and interest)
- Favorable interest rates on bond sales
