Individuals wishing to teach special education on a waiver program status must:
- · Have a valid Kansas standard teaching certificate
- · Have a desire to teach special education students
- · Be fully admitted into a special education program at any college/university
- Wichita State University (316-978-3322) graduate program. Provisional endorsements require 12-15 hours.
- Southwestern College (800) 846-1543 ext. 6253 graduate program. Classes are held at their Wichita East Campus, 2040 S. Rock Rd. Provisional endorsements require 9-12 hours. Program was approved July 2001 with classes starting Fall 2001.
- Emporia State University (620) 341-1200 x 5367 program is a graduate program. Provisional endorsements require 9-12 hours.
- Associated Colleges of Central Kansas (ACCK) (620) 241-5150 offers an undergraduate program that is mostly online.
· Once accepted into a program, individual must complete a plan of study with the assigned special education advisor. This plan of study must be filed with the university education office and a copy sent to the Wichita Public Schools, Human Resources, along with an application for teaching employment.
· Applicants will be sent to building principals for personal interviews and recommendation for contract employment. Human Resources will make offer.
· Applicants must enroll in courses listed in the plan of study. Human Resources will request verification in writing directly from the college/university. Human Resources will submit this information and other paperwork to the Kansas State Department of Education for approval of waiver in special education.
Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP)
The Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP) created by Congress in 1990 is designed to forgive some student loans for nurses who work in underserved areas. Urban school districts usually meet these criteria. Forgivable Loan Agreement and Application
On Monday, October 13, 1999, the Wichita Board of Education approved the Special Education Support Program. This program requires that employees applying for the special education forgivable loans complete an application agreeing to the terms as approved by the Board.
Attached is a copy of the Employee Forgivable Loan Agreement and an Application. If you wish to apply for the forgivable loan, complete and return the agreement and application. Please forward to AMAC – Human Resources in an interschool envelope. Documents to be enclosed are as follows:
1) Employee Forgivable Loan Agreement
*complete, sign on top line of page three, and return with application
2) Application
*complete and return section A, B and C
3) Plan of Study
*this is obtained from your college advisor
4) A transcript
*attach a copy or a memo stating that one is in your personnel file
5) Updated resume
*must be enclosed
A screening committee will consider applications for quality and completeness. Notifications of approval or disapproval will be completed and sent out by the Special Education Division prior to the beginning of each school semester.
