Alternative Certificate Program |
|
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction of the College of Education at Wichita State University offers an alternative route to Kansas teacher licensure, which provides special advantages both to Kansas school districts in south central Kansas and to potential students who qualify for the program. The Kansas counties typically served by this program include: Butler, Cowley, Harvey, Kingman, Reno, Sedgwick and Sumner. Through this program an accredited school district can employ qualifying individuals to teach under a restricted license in content disciplines with teaching shortages. Thus, individuals that have at least a four year college degree and have an academic major in a secondary teaching field that WSU offers licensure in, may complete a teacher licensure program concurrent with employment by a participating school district.
The WSU Transition to Teaching Program has been designed to fill the needs in the "high needs" teaching fields at the middle and high school levels. Currently the "high needs" teaching fields are mathematics and the sciences. However, WSU offers an alternative path to licensure in the following teaching fields: Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, History/Government, French, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, and Spanish. Art, Music, Physical Education, French and Spanish are more difficult to qualify for due to the curriculum requirements for PreK-12 licensure. Biology, Chemistry, English, History/Government, Mathematics and Physics are all offered as 6-12 licensure programs.
In order to qualify for the WSU Transition to Teaching Program, candidates must have a strong background, as defined by Kansas Department of Education guidelines (in most cases at least a 30 credit hours and/or a major), in one or more of the above mentioned content fields. Once eligibility is determined, a partner school district may employ a graduate in one of these fields under a restricted license. All candidates MUST meet the WSU and Kansas State Department of Education eligibility standards

If you are interested in *Secondary or Middle School General Education and in the Alternative Route to Teaching, the regulations require that you have the following:
1. A Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited university
2. The degree must be in a regular education secondary licensure area
3. A cumulative GPA of 2.50 from ALL college coursework completed
If you meet the eligibility requirements, we have programs called “Alternative Route to Licensure” throughout the state of Kansas. You should contact the Alternative Route Contact or the Licensure Officer in the College of Education at a university that offers an endorsement in the content area of your degree. They will need to analyze your transcripts to see if you qualify under the State of Kansas Regulations. If you qualify, you will need to secure employment with a district. The “Alternate Route” program is a three way agreement between the teacher, the district and the university.
Also, below is the link for the “Approved Programs” at the universities in Kansas so you can see which universities have programs in which endorsement areas. When you find one with an approved program in your area of study, please call their College of Education and ask for their Licensure Officer. Approved Teacher Education Programs in Kansas
* Please note: The Kansas Alternative Route Program is strictly for Kansas universities with Kansas school districts and offered for middle and secondary regular education programs. If you are interested in Elementary Education or Special Education, you would need to choose a traditional Teacher Education Program from the Approved Programs link above.
