The Wichita Public Schools celebrated $195,121 worth of gifts to the Education EDGE at the August 13 Board of Education meeting. The $195,121 will benefit students and teachers this school year. The Education EDGE, established in 2003, is the district’s education foundation, allowing private donors to support three key areas – classroom mini-grants, fine arts and athletics – not supported by traditional funding resources.
The Education EDGE was created by Board of Education policy in February 2003 as an opportunity to allow private donors to support three key areas within the Wichita Public Schools not adequately supported by traditional funding resources - classroom mini-grants, athletics and fine arts. This unique partnerships with the Wichita Community Foundation allows all gifts received by the Education EDGE to be devoted to these three "gift fund" areas, all of which are critical to stimulating creativity and building strong connections between students and their schools!
Classroom Mini-Grants Grants recognizing classroom innovation will be awarded through this fund. Teachers will apply each year, and a committee of staff and community volunteers will review and make awards to grants that exhibit creative approaches to student learning. Teachers interested in 2008-2009 Grants should download BOTH application documents: Classroom Mini-Grant Application AND Application Process. To view Classroom Mini-grant page, click here.
Fine Arts All students in the Wichita Public Schools may participate in visual arts, theater, and vocal and instrumental music. The Fine Arts Gift Fund will be used to address district-wide fine arts equipment and facility needs. Priorities for this fund include improving auditoriums and purchasing: band/orchestra instruments, cameras and digital technology and kilns and potters wheels. Athletics The Wichita Public Schools offers 28 interscholastic sports for more than 6,000 middle and high school students. The Athletics Gift Fund will be used to address district-wide athletic equipment and facility needs. Priorities for this fund include renovating existing or constructing new running tracks, swimming pools, tennis courts, practice facilities and purchasing new athletic uniforms.
As a 501(c)(3) organization, The Wichita Community Foundation is an independent public charity. All donations qualify for charitable contributions under IRS regulations. For more information about the Foundation, please visit www.wichitacf.org or call 264-4880.
