Why is this journey important?
The district has worked diligently over the last several years to change the structure and content of what it does in a way that positively affects student learning. The journey continues by changing the culture of our schools and moving from a good institution to one of greatness, where every person is recognized and valued for who they are.
Cultural proficiency is an inside-out approach that focuses first on individuals and encouraging them to reflect on their own individual understandings and values The cultural proficiency approach to diversity surprises many people who expect a diversity program to teach them about other people, not about themselves. The commitment to become culturally proficient results in a way of being that acknowledges and validates the current values and feelings of people, encouraging change without threatening people's feelings of worth.
The cultural proficiency approach prizes individuals but focuses chiefly on both the school's culture, which has a life force beyond that of the individuals within the school, as well as the values and the behavior of individuals. The process involves all members of the school community in determining how to align policies, practices, and procedures to achieve cultural proficiency. This approach attacks the problems caused by the diversification of students, faculty and community at the systemic level.
