2009-10 District Demographics

• 50,042 students in 2009-10, an increase of nearly 900  students from 2008-2009.
• 38% Caucasian, 28% Hispanic, 20% African-American, 7% Multi-Racial, 5% Asian and 2% Native American
• Educating approximately 11 percent of all public school students in the State of Kansas, and more than half of all school-aged children in Sedgwick County.
• 56 elementary schools, 16 middle schools, 2 K-8 schools, 11 high schools, 16 other special programs
• Largest district between the Mississippi River and Denver, and Dallas and the Canadian border.
• Third largest employer in the Wichita MSA. 
• Approximately 4,000 teachers, 3,000 classified/support staff, and 240 administrators, which include principals.
• 71 languages are spoken in the homes of our students
• 17,000 students travel to school by bus; 500 buses/other vehicles transport students to school
• 30,000 lunches and 10,000 breakfasts are served every day
• $621 million annual budget, 75 percent of which is for salaries and benefits.
